That’s what I meant about horizontal attacks. Iirc that was the term used in the explanation that convinced me to consider a VPS. 😅
…though I still want stuff locally, so studying this type of network security is still in my roadmap.

Thanks!
About studying about operating systems and docker, I think I know what you mean. I had come across some info on docker already, and it sounded like a system image, as you’d get on a VM or with dd, or a disc ISO or disk ROM dump.
Will make sure to look further into it!

I’ll be doing others’ suggestions of going from the basics, to be sure whether I’m missing or not any knowledge. This earlier parts shouldn’t require internet, but I’ll ask once I get to the DNS part. Thanks. 😊

what is a phone book?

@atheqtpie@piefed.blahaj.zone two things:
First, it needs an initial investment, but maybe buy a Raspberry Pi or some other single-board computer to put your site/sites on?
Second, in a post asking about self-hosting that I made, someone suggested the site https://linuxupskillchallenge.org/, and reading its “what is it about” page, I see the text from the attached image. Perhaps worth investigating.

Makes sense e.e"
Thanks!

Noted. Thanks!

Checking here, Hollos still needs a site to use as relay, similar to Bluesky, so I’m guessing you’d need to either host the site on your machine, or to use a VPS. I need to study and test it further though.
Anyways, here’s the links:

Not quite the same thing, but maybe run a Hollos instance instead? Yet to test, but supposedly it runs on your phone by what they market.
Also seen two other minimalist projects implementing ActivityPub. Let me see if I can find them.

Linux was born out of manually making drivers to see how hardware works, which after putting enough together, Linus noticed he had a kernel.
Meanwhile, people pushing code they don’t understand are more often than not breaking the programs they “help” with.
I’d suggest studying low level coding to at least be able to audit others’ codes, including LLMs’, let alone to publish comnputer-generated codes.

I have, I just can’t get myself motivated to actually write about it
The first step is the hardest of a journey. Push through the beginning, and you should get it going. 👌

Can’t check now, but if there aren’t forks named like BookTale and BookStory, I’ll riot.
Jokes aside, if the license he used allows forking, dude’s tripping, and could even get sued depending on the country for false accusation of crime.
And ah, Discord, great for nuking inconvenient chats. Imagine if it had happened over at a public forum so people’s reactions could be backed up.
And dunno where I’d draw the line, but 20k lines imo is a bit past reasonable. How would anyone audit that many in a timely manner? But with the “dev” doing that daily, that’d be hard to even pretend.

I’ve had a similar issue with / and some special keys. Numpad solved the / problem, using the system through SSH allows properly using your keyboard, and I’d imagine keybinds such as Gaomon’s or AntimicroX’s could be used too.

Worth noting resistance is not the same as a solution. While building it is important, the alternative being losing, it’s an eternal process.
As a comparison, quoting Sabaton’s Versailles song:
it will evolve, it will change
and War will return, sooner than we think```

Using Ollama, it’s a bit laggy using Termux on a Redmi Note 10 Pro, though the model I picked may not be the best optimized.

Linux initially, giving way for me to see that the best alternatives to me are generally the ones I control.
And considering geopolitics, where I can see how dangerous a well-positioned spy/saboteur/paid actor can be, my next self host project is some ActivityPub social media, at least as an one-user instance since I don’t want to act as a company yet, so I have control of where I’m posting from too.

Dunno your region, but Registro.br’s domains are rather cheap imo. However, I need to check again, but afaik it’s only for people with CPF or CNPJ, the Brazilian equivalents of person and company identification numbers.

RSS’s a big for me and had been considering originally using Mastodon + RSS Parrot. But though I don’t like the UI of Friendica, its native tracker bot function sounds rather interesting. 👀
Thinking here, the site engine I’d pick for daily use would probably be Mbin. But as I hear it is a bit of a processing hog, running it and a Friendica instance on the same device would maybe be too much for the device, so maybe I should buy another Raspberry Pi or some other SBC for it.
Thanks for explaining the path!
About Yunohost... (rambly comment ahead)
I’m aware of it, but avoiding for the reason of learning manually, and also because, as an end user, I don’t like any of the ActivityPub-compatible softwares they offer. Also the amount of troubleshooting I did for people that would press triangle¹ early on in Autoplugin for the PS Vita sure helped making me very wary of automated processes without understanding them.
¹Triangle made all homebrew plugins listed in Autoplugin get installed, including experimental and incompatible ones. Also been some ~7 years since the function got removed and I never used it myself, but the problem was so widespread I remember down to the key used for running it… 🥹
